As part of the Mining industry vision in NSW to expand and upgrade regional NSW mine sites, NEPEAN Engineering & Innovation were awarded the subcontract for the structural steel works in May 2020 for a Mining project in regional New South Wales.
The project required approximately 700 tonnes of steel in a challenging schedule, during which NEPEAN Engineering & Innovation maintained close coordination and cooperation with the mine’s project team, to manage and overcome the challenges and meet the project requirements and deadlines.
The scope of works included the detailing, supply, fabrication, painting and delivery of the Screen Building, Crusher Building, GTUs, CV006 and the Crusher Feed Bins, in-addition to the other metal works that included handrails, gratings and sheeting / cladding works.
The composition of the 700 tonne order included: a 110 tonne crusher feeder bin which was fabricated and transported in 9 modules and assembled on site prior to installation; 100 tonnes of complex welded structures; and the balance of 490 tonnes was a good mix between light and medium complex steel.
The overall project duration was 17 weeks. 4 weeks were used for shop detailing which included a high level of coordination with all involved parties, to develop the design details and ensure all mining operational equipment were well coordinated. The shop drawings preparation and approval processes were fast tracked to comply with the tight schedule of the project. The remaining 13 weeks were for fabrication with an average of 50 tonnes of steel fabricated per week. NEPEAN Engineering & Innovation utilised both day and night shift to full capacity, to maintain the required productivity levels.
In total we had 50 loads of steel delivered to site which included 15 complex loads where we needed to plan the routes and obtain the required transport permits.
Despite the compressed project schedule, NEPEAN Engineering & Innovation successfully delivered the project on time and in full through close coordination with the Client, to ensure site progress. The project delivered on key milestones for steel construction, helping the Client to plan for other trades works, including the start of the testing and commissioning processes.
